Understanding Righteousness

It’s so important for believer to understand that they have been made righteous in Christ. A lack of understanding of righteousness holds more people in bondage than perhaps anything else. Righteousness is one of the most misunderstood subjects in the Bible.

What is righteousness? Righteousness is the nature of God.

The moment you become born again this nature of God is impacted into your spirit to give you right standing with God. It gives one uninterrupted access to God. It’s the rightness of God Impacted into a human spirit that makes him right.

We have right standing with God, not because of what we did, but because of what Jesus did for us in God’s great plan of redemption.

Too often we associate righteousness with good works. The Bible teaches that good works and all our right conduct are Important. But all our good works and all our right conduct could never make us righteous. If they could, we wouldn’t need Jesus.

How do you become righteous?

For with the heart man BELIEVETH unto RIGHTEOUSNESS. Romans 10:10

By believing unto righteousness, that’s how you become righteous.

For if by are man’s offense death reigned, by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of THE GIFT OF RIGHTEOUSNESS shall reign in life by one Jesus Christ. Romans 5:17

Righteousness is a GIFT; you do not earn it by your good works or performance.

For he hath made him to be sin. Who knew no sin; that we might be made the RIGHTEOUSNESS of God in Him. 2 Corinthians 5:21

In the new birth (a new creation 2 Corinthians 5:17) you are made the righteousness of God in Him. In the new birth you are born righteous.

Can someone grow or increase in righteousness?

We cannot grow unto RIGHTEOUSNESS. We can grow and increase in the knowledge of righteousness. We can grow in the Lord and can develop spiritually. But righteousness is not something we can work to attain. We cannot grow or increase in righteousness.
